Why the Lakers are keeping an eye on Jonathan Kuminga despite major obstacles

Trade speculation surrounding Jonathan Kuminga has followed the Golden State Warriors forward for much of the season, but a new wrinkle has added intrigue to an already crowded rumor mill.

While familiar teams like Sacramento, Dallas, Phoenix, and New Orleans have repeatedly been connected to Kuminga, a surprising Western Conference contender has quietly remained in the background. According to recent reporting, the Los Angeles Lakers have continued to keep tabs on Kuminga‘s situation, even after an earlier summer inquiry failed to gain traction.

The idea of Kuminga in a Lakers uniform initially feels unconventional. Los Angeles has been searching the market for a reliable wing who can defend at a high level and knock down open shots, particularly from beyond the arc. Kuminga‘s offensive game, however, has yet to fully align with that description.

His three-point shooting remains inconsistent, and while his physical tools suggest defensive upside, discipline and foul control continue to be areas of concern. Still, the Lakers’ interest reflects a broader strategy: casting a wide net in a shallow wing market where true solutions are scarce.

Rather than signaling an imminent trade, the Lakers’ involvement appears more exploratory. Monitoring Kuminga allows the front office to stay prepared if Golden State shifts its stance or if market conditions change.

For a team operating under intense pressure to maximize its championship window, even imperfect options deserve evaluation. Kuminga‘s youth, athleticism, and potential for growth clearly remain attractive traits across the league, even if his current profile does not neatly match Los Angeles’ stated needs.

Salary cap rules make any deal complex

The financial realities surrounding a potential trade present significant hurdles. Both the Lakers and Warriors are hard-capped at the first apron, leaving almost no room for flexibility.

Because Kuminga‘s contract would increase after a trade due to a built-in kicker, Los Angeles would need to send out well over $20 million dollars in salary just to remain compliant. That requirement alone makes a simple one-for-one swap impossible.

As a result, any theoretical deal would likely involve multiple rotation players. The Lakers would need to combine mid-sized contracts, potentially sacrificing depth to make the math work while still filling out the rest of the roster.

From Golden State’s perspective, accepting such a package would only make sense if it delivered either long-term value or immediate contributors who fit their system.

Given those constraints, it is unlikely the Lakers would part with core pieces or premium assets for Kuminga. Their interest appears rooted more in due diligence than urgency. Still, the fact that Los Angeles continues to check in highlights how fluid the trade landscape remains.

As the season progresses and pressure mounts, situations can evolve quickly. For now, Kuminga remains with the Warriors, but persistent monitoring from contenders suggests his future will continue to generate discussion.
