Why Shedeur Sanders is struggling to adapt to NFL speed: Expert insights

The Brown‘s Sunday loss to the San Francisco 49ers served as another stark reminder for Shedeur Sanders that transitioning from college stardom to the NFL’s frenetic rhythm isn’t simply a matter of arm talent.

For Sanders, the defeat underscored a troubling reality: the speed and complexity of NFL defenses are exposing flaws that might not be fixable with pure talent alone.

Sanders finished the game completing 16 of 25 passes for 149 yards and hooking up with rookie Harold Fannin Jr. on a 34-yard touchdown, his second career TD.

The Browns even led 8-7 late in the second quarter after the two-point conversion by Quinshon Judkins.

But Cleveland’s offense sputtered in the 26-8 loss, unable to generate rhythm or consistency through the air.

Much of that stagnation stemmed from Sanders’ struggle to keep up with the NFL’s processing demands.

Sanders’ struggling to keep up with the NFL pace

Sanders’ situation is unique, but not entirely surprising. Thrust into mid-season action as a fifth-round rookie, and following two previous quarterback changes, he was always considered a long-term project.

The Browns drafted him knowing refinement would be required, especially after already selecting Dillon Gabriel and signing veteran Joe Flacco.

NFL analyst and senior NFL Films producer Greg Cosell broke down Sanders’ performance on the Ross Tucker Podcast, offering a candid assessment of where the young quarterback is falling behind.

“Shedeur is still playing at college speed,” Cosell said. “He’s not dropping back with the quickness you need to drop back, he’s not getting back in the pocket and setting his feet. So, what happens is you end up being slow in what you’re seeing because you’re not really ready to process and deliver the football.”

Cosell added that Sanders struggled to anticipate windows, noting, “This week, he did not see what he needed to see at the necessary speed. He was just playing a little slow twitch, and that’s very, very common for college quarterbacks, particularly those who spend almost all of their time in college in the shotgun.”

Where the breakdown happened

Statistically, Sanders’ Sunday looked workable: 16 completions on 25 attempts, 149 yards and a touchdown.

That was an improvement over his debut against Las Vegas, but the tape revealed costly moments where opportunities were left on the field.

Chief among them were multiple missed throws to wideout Jerry Jeudy. On several plays where the design created clear openings, Sanders hesitated instead of releasing the ball.

Jeudy finished with only three catches for 26 yards on four targets despite being open more often.

Beyond the quarterback issues, the Browns’ collapse was emblematic of systemic failures.

Special teams miscues and poor execution on fourth downs handed the 49ers short fields, which they turned into touchdowns and a field goal.

Cleveland’s offense showed flashes, especially with the early TD drive capped by Sanders to Fannin, but after that, the rhythm disappeared.

An ill-timed sack on a fourth-and-16, followed by a muffed punt deep in their own territory, doomed any comeback hopes.

Despite a near-identical total yardage and time of possession to the opponent, the execution on crucial downs never materialized.

Third-down conversions were rare, and every phase except defense seemed to unravel in moments that demanded precision and composure.
