Why Scottie Scheffler joins Tiger Woods in golf history

Scottie Scheffler continues to dominate the field at The 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Following a bogey-free 64 in Round 2, the world No.1 carded a steady 4-under 67 in Round 3, extending his tournament total to 14-under. That performance gives him a four-shot lead over China’s Haotong Li heading into Sunday’s final round.

Scheffler’s command of the course, despite swirling coastal winds and pressure-packed pairings, has put him on the brink of his first career Open victory and fourth major title overall.

Scheffler’s historic streak channels Tiger Woods

Scheffler’s performance so far ties a rare Tiger Woods record, becoming the first World No.1 since Woods in 2006 to hold the 36-hole lead at The Open. Now, with a third-round 67 added to his resume, the 28-year-old Texan is showing why many consider him the best golfer on the planet.

His consistency in majors is staggering, he’s been inside the top 10 after 54 holes in six of the last seven. Analysts continue drawing parallels to Woods’ poise and precision under pressure. Scheffler’s bogey-free stretch across Rounds 2 and 3 reinforces his mental strength and course management mystery.

Final Round Outlook: Claret Jug in sight for Scheffler

Scheffler leads Haotong Li by four shots and Matt Fitzpatrick by five, with Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland needing miracle finishes to catch up. With the weather expected to wrosen on Sunday, Scheffler’s current cushion could be decisive.

However, The Open has a long history of wild Sunday swings, and Li, chasing history for China, has shown flashes of brilliance this week. The pressure now rests squarely on Scheffler to maintain control and secure the Claret Jug, completing one of the most dominant wire-to-wire runs in recent Open memory.
