When Venezuela eliminated Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, the celebration was intense. One moment in particular, involving Ronald Acuña Jr., quickly went viral and sparked debate across social media.

The Venezuelan outfielder was filmed during the post-game celebration repeatedly shouting: “We ate sushi!”. The clip spread rapidly online and shifted attention from the result of the game to the tone of the celebration itself.

The victory itself was significant. Japan is widely considered one of the strongest teams in international baseball and regularly enters the tournament as a favorite. That explains why the Venezuelan players were particularly emotional after the win.

Why the celebration turned controversial

The reaction became controversial mainly because of how Japan is culturally perceived internationally. Japan is often associated with strong traditions of respect, discipline and sportsmanship – values that many fans expect to be reflected in international competitions. Because of that reputation, some viewers felt the chant sounded mocking toward the defeated team, even if it was meant as playful trash talk.

For critics, the issue wasn’t just excitement but whether the remark crossed into unnecessary taunting after eliminating a respected opponent.

At the same time, plenty of baseball fans saw the moment differently. Supporters pointed out that emotional celebrations are common in international tournaments, especially when a team defeats one of the sport’s powerhouse programs. Japan has been one of the most dominant countries in the history of the tournament, making the win even more meaningful for Venezuela.

Why many fans defended Acuña

Others also interpreted the phrase simply as competitive banter, not cultural disrespect – a spontaneous reaction in the heat of celebration rather than a calculated insult. In international sports, these moments often fall into a gray area between passion and provocation. Lost in the debate is the reason the celebration happened in the first place.

The country consistently fields elite rosters filled with stars from Nippon Professional Baseball and Major League Baseball, making them one of the most feared teams in the tournament. For Venezuela, the victory not only represented a massive competitive milestone but also fueled the belief that the team could make a deep run in the tournament.

The episode highlights how the World Baseball Classic blends national pride, cultural differences and intense competition. A moment that might feel like harmless celebration in one country can be interpreted very differently in another. In a global tournament watched by millions, even a few words shouted in celebration can quickly become a larger conversation.
