Drake Maye and his wife, Anne Michael, continue to enjoy the NFL offseason in Japan, looking to put the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl loss behind them.
There, they have not only taken the opportunity to do some sightseeing, but have also stayed connected to sports thanks to the QB’s brother, Luke Maye, and his basketball team. Now, they made an appearance at the World Baseball Classic at Tokyo Dome over the weekend, but one detail in the Pats star’s attire led fans to accuse him of “sports treason.”
Drake angers fans with his choice of T-shirt
Maye and his wife were present at the group stage match between Japan and Korea, where Shohei Ohtani’s team defeated Korea 8-6. However, one detail caught the attention of MLB and NFL fans.
Of course, the couple’s presence did not go unnoticed, especially after the official Major League Baseball account on X shared a photo of them at the Tokyo Dome. “New England royalty at the #WorldBaseballClassic. Patriots QB Drake ‘Drake Maye’ Maye and Ann Michael Maye in the Tokyo Dome for Team Korea vs. Team Japan!” they wrote.
In the photo, Ann can be seen wearing jeans, a blue, white, and red striped shirt, and a fur coat. However, Drake‘s look stole the show, as he added a Los Angeles Dodgers jersey, presumably Ohtani’s number 17, to his black pants and plain white T-shirt.
The truth is that some Boston Red Sox fans reacted, as they expected him to show support for the city’s baseball team since he plays for a Boston team like the Patriots.
“Dude. Drake man. NEVER wear a Dodger jersey again. It’s Red Sox only bro,” “why Dodgers [crying emojis],” “WHAT ARE YOU WEARING DRAKE,” “Gotta get that man a new jersey!” commented some fans.
Others, meanwhile, were excited about the idea of Drake being a Dodger fan: “even Maye is a Dodger! They really do get everyone…,” “Drake Maye is a Dodgers fan! Okay. He’s cool, he’s the only Patriots player I don’t hate now lol,” “Keep on that jersey my goat,” they wrote.
Meanwhile, several followers came to his defense: “Man… He is from NC. They don’t have a baseball team and his favorite player growing up was probably a Dodger, so he became a fan, or he is a fan of S.O. Even myself, as a Boston native, was a huge fan of Kobe despite being a C’s lifer. I own a Kobe jersey,” “I love Drake Maye too much to care about the Dodgers shirt,” “His brother is supposed to be playing for a Japanese football team,” they explained.
The truth is that the choice of shirt was probably related to the context of the event. The tournament was being held in Japan, and much of the attention was focused on Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar who plays for the Dodgers. Therefore, it is possible that Maye simply wanted to show admiration for one of the most famous players in baseball today or to join in the atmosphere of the stadium.
Meanwhile, the World Baseball Classic continues on Monday. Will we see Drake change his jersey?
