Why is Anthony Edwards giving NBA tsar, Adam Silver, such a headache with regards to fines

Anthony Edwards‘ name has been increasingly associated with fines and technical fouls this NBA season.

It almost feels as though he’s competing with himself to accumulate more. While this may seem odd, there’s more to the story than just the fines and technicals.

Rumors are circulating about a potential loophole in Adam Silver‘s system, which, if utilized by the Minnesota Timberwolves, could offer Edwards a break from further penalties.

The growing list of fines

As of now, Edwards has already racked up $285K in fines for technical fouls this season. With the way things are going, it’s clear that the costs are only going to rise, potentially causing major financial strain on the 23-year-old. But there’s still hope. NBA analysts Tim MacMahon and Brian Windhorst recently discussed on The Hoop Collective podcast how Edwards might be able to follow in Luka Doncic‘s footsteps and avoid some of these penalties.

MacMahon and Windhorst pointed out that Edwards could potentially sidestep technical fouls, much like Doncic did during his time with the Dallas Mavericks, with a little help from his team.

“Ant is too shy now. Those 16 T’s for the superstars… the league tends to be pretty lenient on the reviews of those things.” MacMahon explained.

However, this strategy will require Edwards to make some adjustments. While Doncic seemed to have had the necessary support from Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Edwards would need similar backing from the Timberwolves.

Edwards is getting dangerously close to $300K in fines for his technical fouls. Windhorst pointed out,

“You get suspended for a game”

If this continues, which could further disrupt Edwards‘ season. But even if the fines keep coming, Edwards is financially secure-his $50 million Adidas deal and $42 million NBA salary for the season make sure of that. So while the fines may be painful, his financial foundation remains solid.

With Victor Wembanyama now sidelined indefinitely, many believe that Edwards could step into the role of the NBA’s next star. Despite Edwards‘ modesty, claiming that Wembanyama deserves the position more, others argue that he’s just as deserving. As the NBA looks for a new face, Edwards could very well fill that void.

Draymond Green recently shared his perspective on what it takes to become the face of the NBA. On his podcast, Green said, “You must represent the league in a positive manner, in a positive light.”

He emphasized that a player needs to adapt to both the game and the league, just as stars like Stephen Curry and LeBron James have done.

But it’s not just about basketball; players must also carry themselves in a way that upholds the NBA brand, both on and off the court.
