George Pickens‘ rise with the Dallas Cowboys has become one of the most surprising storylines of the season, not just because of his own breakthrough, but because of what it says about the team that let him go.
The Pittsburgh Steelers believed they had seen enough volatility and inconsistency to justify moving on from the explosive receiver.
Two months later, his production in Dallas reads like a weekly reminder of a superstar they failed to unlock.
Pickens has flourished from the moment he landed in Dallas. With 1,142 receiving yards, he has already surpassed the entire Steelers receiver group, which has combined for 1,082.
It’s the kind of contrast that has deepened the frustration of a fanbase that spent years waiting for him to become a true number one option.
The Cowboys only surrendered a third and fifth round pick for Pickens, a modest price for someone now producing at a top tier receiver level.
His value in Dallas has skyrocketed alongside Dak Prescott‘s resurgence, especially during the team’s back to back wins over last season’s Super Bowl participants.
“We beat the past two Super Bowl winners,” Pickens said after the Thanksgiving victory over Kansas City. “I feel like we still got that same type of caliber.
“As long as we just execute, take it one step forward each day, I feel like we got that caliber of guys.”
That confidence reflects not just the Cowboys‘ momentum but his comfort in their system.
Pickens has already set career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns, and is pacing toward a 1,600 yard season that would vault him into the league’s elite. Meanwhile, the Steelers are still searching for answers.
Despite Aaron Rodgers joining the team, DK Metcalf has managed only 573 receiving yards, and the offense continues to struggle with the same issues that limited Pickens early in his career: conservative play calling, inconsistent quarterback performance and an inability to create separation through scheme.
The comparison has been unkind. Pickens has eight touchdown catches. The entire Steelers receiver room has ten.
A looming challenge for the Cowboys
For Dallas, the success comes with long term complications. CeeDee Lamb is already on a major contract, and Pickens is now eligible for an extension that could command top tier money. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged both the luxury and the difficulty.
“We got two number ones,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan. “And that really is problematic.”
For now, the Cowboys are simply benefitting from the most dynamic receiving duo in the league at a moment when their season has turned. Three straight wins have put them directly back into the playoff conversation, and Pickens has been central to that turnaround.
In Pittsburgh, though, the shock remains. A player the Steelers saw as expendable has turned into exactly what they had hoped he would become. In Dallas, he is a rising star. In Pittsburgh, he is a reminder of what could have been.
