Why ex-champ Sergio Mora doesn’t think Jake Paul will survive first round against Anthony Joshua

We are inching closer to be one of the most watched, and debated, heavyweight fights of the year. On December 19, former world champion Anthony Joshua squares off against social-media star-turned-boxer Jake Paul at the Kaseya Center in Miami.

Veteran former champion Sergio Mora recently weighed in on the matchup on Chris Mannix’s YouTube chnnael, stating that Paul “shouldn’t stand a chance” and predicting a first-round knockout if Joshua fights with serious intent.

Mora added that Joshua could even “toy” with Paul to extend the fight for spectacle, but in reality, he expects the contest to be over almost immediately.

However, Joshua‘s recent history complicates things. After being knocked out in five rounds by Daniel Dubois in September 2024, Joshua has faced criticism for declining skills and reduced stamina.

The Joshua stepping into the ring against Paul is not the same powerhouse from a decade ago, and fans and analysts alike have expressed concern that this may not be the fight to fully demonstrate Joshua’s knockout ability.

Meanwhile, Paul has taken his preparation seriously. He has recruited experienced heavyweights Jared Anderson, Frank Sanchez, and Lawrence Okolie as sparring partners, giving him exposure to bigger and more technically skilled opponents.

A blowout or a fight with questions

Fans of Joshua argue the contest could end almost instantly due to his experience and size advantage. Promoter Eddie Hearn and other insiders have echoed this view, emphasizing the disparity in pedigree and championship-level exposure.

However, the uncertainty remains. Critics point to Joshua‘s recent losses and long periods of inactivity as factors that may blunt his ability to finish Paul quickly.

For Paul, being the underdog is no deterrent as his sparring with top-tier fighters shows that he is taking this bout seriously and could use his youth and adaptability to survive longer than expected.

If Joshua fights at full intensity, Mora‘s prediction of a first-round knockout could very well come true. Still, the combination of Joshua‘s recent decline and Paul‘s preparation ensures that fans will be on edge.

December 19 promises a high-profile spectacle, where every second in the ring will be scrutinized and one punch could define it all.
