Why doesn’t any NFL team want to sign free agent Stefon Diggs?

Stefon Diggs, the former New England Patriots WR1, has remained one of the most talked-about players in NFL free agency. Despite a standout 2024 season, the 32-year-old receiver is still unsigned, raising questions about why teams haven’t jumped at the chance to add a proven talent.

After recovering from a torn ACL, Diggs delivered an impressive season, catching 85 of 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns.

Those are strong WR1 numbers in any offense, showing that he still has plenty of production left in the tank. Yet, as NFL free agency enters Week 2, Diggs is surprisingly still on the board.

The off-field and age factors

Part of the hesitation around Diggs stems from off-field concerns. Rumors about alleged personal issues and lawsuits have circulated, though neither the Patriots nor Diggs have publicly addressed them.

While these matters are unconfirmed, they may have contributed to teams being cautious.

Age also plays a role. At 32 and heading into his 12th NFL season, Diggs is no longer the explosive route-runner he once was.

While his production remains strong, front offices often prioritize younger, cheaper wide receivers when planning long-term investments. Coupled with his previous cap hit in New England, it’s easier to see why teams might hesitate.

Potential landing spots and future outlook

Despite these factors, there is still interest in Diggs across the league. Teams such as the Baltimore Ravens, Washington Commanders, and Houston Texans have reportedly explored opportunities to acquire him.

His agents have made it clear that he is open to a range of options, keeping his prospects alive.

Interestingly, Patriots executive Eliot Wolf hasn’t completely ruled out a reunion, though any return would likely come with a smaller role and a pay cut.

Regardless of where he lands, Diggs‘s time in New England will be remembered as a crucial part of the post-Tom Brady era, helping the team achieve notable success.

For now, Stefon Diggs remains a free agent with impressive recent stats but a market shaped by age, cost, and off-field considerations. His next landing spot could be a pivotal chapter in extending a career that has already left a significant mark on the NFL.
