A scary moment at Guaranteed Rate Field unfolded Wednesday night as longtime anthem performer Gerald Chaney collapsed during Jackie Robinson Day pregame festivities.

Chaney was performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before the Chicago White Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays game when he suddenly stopped. After briefly trying to continue, he collapsed on the field, triggering an immediate medical emergency response from EMTs.

The White Sox later confirmed that Chaney was alert and doing well while undergoing hospital evaluation.

“I’m really glad to hear that he is doing well,” said manager Will Venable after the game. “It was obviously a scary moment… the most important thing is that he’s all right.”

Medical staff treated Chaney for several minutes before he was taken off the field on a stretcher, as players from both teams watched. The incident caused a 12-minute delay before first pitch.

Chaney, a White Sox staple, was also scheduled to perform the national anthem.

“The entire White Sox family is sending love to Gerald and his family for a full and speedy recovery,” the team said in an official statement.
