Why Caitlin Clark’s off-season choices had the Fever GM totally impressed

While most rookies might bask in their breakout season with some much-needed rest, Caitlin Clark did the opposite, just not in the way you’d expect. After a historic NCAA run and an explosive rookie year with the Indiana Fever, Clark passed on a million-dollar opportunity with equity and revenue sharing in the Unrivaled league. Why? She simply needed a break from competitive basketball. Instead of high-pressure courts, Clark spent her offseason at LPGA pro-am tournaments, cheered at NFL games, and still managed to show up consistently for her WNBA obligations.

“She always showed up,” said Fever GM Amber Cox, who was continually stunned by Clark’s dedication despite her jam-packed schedule. Even the team’s athletic coach, Sarah Kessler, noted Clark never skipped workouts, even when given the option to rest.

Work ethic beyond her years

Most rookies in the WNBA take a couple of seasons to adapt. Not Clark. “She’s far beyond her years in terms of her understanding of how to work,” said Fever coach Stephanie White. Her teammates and coaching staff have all echoed the same sentiment, Caitlin is no ordinary rookie. From spending hours at the gym to working on long-range shots, Clark’s preparation never took a backseat. Even when managing a minor leg injury before the season, she remained actively involved on the court.

And it shows. Her improved strength and shot precision have been on full display in the preseason. Though the Fever are easing her into full playtime, Clark has already become a problem for opposing defenses, even at less than 100%.

“Caitlin from downtown” makes her radio debut

In a surprise twist, Clark recently called into local sports radio 107.5 The Fan after attending a Pacers game, using the alias “Caitlin from downtown.” Her analysis? Sharp as ever. “It was just one of those nights where you literally could not miss,” she said. Fans quickly recognized her voice, and her signature deep-shot reference gave her away.

The nickname quickly caught fire online and perfectly fits the star guard known for her three-point shooting. As Clark and the Fever prepare to open the season on May 17 against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, one thing’s for sure: “Caitlin from downtown” is just getting started.
