Who will own the Colts after Jim Irsay’s passing? Meet Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Indianapolis’ potential next owner

The future of the Indianapolis Colts-one of the NFL’s most storied franchises-extends beyond the playing field. As owner Jim Irsay, now in his mid-60s, continues his passionate stewardship of the team, speculation has begun to grow around what will happen once his tenure inevitably comes to an end. In the high-stakes world of professional sports ownership, succession planning is not just about who signs the checks, but who shapes the legacy.

The Colts have been in the Irsay family for over four decades. Jim Irsay inherited the team from his father, Robert Irsay, in 1997 after years of serving in various executive roles within the organization. Since then, Jim has molded the franchise with a distinct personal touch, balancing emotional investment with business strategy.

Now, as questions about succession naturally arise, all eyes turn to the next generation of the Irsay family.

The Rise of Carlie Irsay-Gordon

Among Jim Irsay’s three daughters, Carlie Irsay-Gordon has emerged as the clear frontrunner to take over the team’s leadership. She currently serves as Vice Chair and has played a visible role in day-to-day operations for over a decade. Carlie holds a background in psychology and business, and is known within the league for her professionalism, poise, and growing influence.

She has represented the Colts at league meetings, participated in major organizational decisions, and has been publicly endorsed by her father as a capable future leader. In fact, during a 2022 interview, Jim Irsay remarked, “Carlie is more than ready. The team will stay in the family.”

Jim Irsay has made it clear on multiple occasions: the Colts will not be sold to outside interests. Unlike other NFL teams that have been subject to ownership shake-ups, Irsay has consistently emphasized continuity and legacy. His three daughters-Carlie, Casey, and Kalen-have all been involved with the team in varying capacities, and are expected to play roles in the future structure of the organization.

This kind of multigenerational ownership is rare but not unprecedented in the NFL. The Rooney family in Pittsburgh and the Mara family in New York serve as similar models for continuity in leadership across decades.

Challenges Ahead

While the plan to keep the Colts within the Irsay family seems secure, challenges remain. The next generation will face a changing NFL landscape, where media rights, stadium economics, and athlete empowerment continue to reshape the league. Whoever inherits the team must also navigate the enormous expectations of maintaining competitive excellence while honoring the Irsay name.

Additionally, the emotional weight of carrying on a legacy as personal and publicly scrutinized as Jim Irsay’s could prove as demanding as the business aspects of team ownership.

For now, Jim Irsay remains deeply involved with the Colts-whether it’s sharing musical artifacts on social media or commenting passionately about the team’s performance. But the groundwork for succession has clearly been laid. And when the time comes, fans can expect that the franchise will remain under the stewardship of a family that has lived and breathed Colts football for generations.

The most likely successor? Carlie Irsay-Gordon- poised, prepared, and already leading.
