Who is the Chiefs player the Chicago Bears want to take to protect Caleb Williams?

The Chicago Bears are taking decisive steps to protect their franchise quarterback, Caleb Williams, after a tumultuous 2024 season. Despite Williams‘ standout rookie campaign, where he shattered team records, his offensive line struggled immensely.

The Bears led the league with a staggering 68 sacks allowed-an alarming number that underscored their urgent need for reinforcements.

With their coaching staff now finalized under new head coach Ben Johnson, the focus has shifted to fortifying the offensive front. Johnson, known for his offensive acumen with the Detroit Lions, is expected to bring a fresh, dynamic approach to Chicago. His goal? To build a system that allows Williams to thrive without constantly being under siege.

The Bears‘ coaching overhaul extends beyond Johnson. Dennis Allen joins as defensive coordinator, bringing an aggressive philosophy aimed at forcing turnovers. Meanwhile, Declan Doyle takes over as offensive coordinator, set to collaborate with Johnson on a scheme tailored to Williams‘ strengths. With Richard Hightower returning as special teams coordinator, the pieces are in place for a major transformation.

However, no matter how talented the coaching staff is, none of it will matter if Williams doesn’t have time in the pocket. That’s why the Bears’ next priority is clear-securing top-tier offensive line talent in free agency.

Could Trey Smith Be the Answer?

One name that has quickly risen to the top of the Bears’ wish list is Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith. The two-time Super Bowl champion is set to hit the free-agent market after the Chiefs opted not to place the franchise or transition tag on him. This decision has sparked interest from multiple teams, with Chicago among the most eager suitors.

At 6-foot-6 and 321 pounds, Smith is a formidable presence on the field. He has been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s offensive line, providing Patrick Mahomes with the protection needed to operate at an elite level.

His ability to dominate in the trenches, particularly in run-blocking situations, makes him an attractive option for a Bears team looking to establish a more balanced and effective offense.

For Chicago, landing Smith would be a game-changer. His experience in high-pressure situations, combined with his proven track record of success, would bring stability to an offensive line that desperately needs it. More importantly, his presence would allow Williams to focus on making plays rather than constantly scrambling to avoid defenders.

Why the Bears Must Prioritize Smith

The Bears‘ offensive struggles in 2024 were not just about sacks-they affected every aspect of their game. Williams often found himself under duress, limiting his ability to execute the game plan effectively. The constant pressure also impacted the running game, making it difficult for the offense to establish any rhythm.

Bringing in Smith would provide a significant boost in multiple ways:

  • Pass Protection – Smith’s size and strength would immediately improve Williams’ pocket security, giving him more time to read defenses and make accurate throws.
  • Run Blocking – Smith excels at creating running lanes, which would help Chicago establish a more effective ground game and take pressure off Williams.
  • Experience and Leadership – As a key member of the Chiefs’ championship-winning roster, Smith knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. His veteran presence would be invaluable in helping the Bears’ offensive line develop into a cohesive unit.

With free agency looming, the Bears must act quickly if they want to secure Smith. Several teams will be vying for his services, but Chicago has both the financial flexibility and the pressing need to make a strong offer.

As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on the Bears‘ front office to see if they can land the protection Williams desperately needs. If they succeed in signing Smith, it could mark the beginning of a new era in Chicago-one where their young quarterback is no longer running for his life, but instead leading a high-powered offense capable of competing at the highest level.
