Jose “Chapulin” Salas won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight world title after defeating South Africa’s Landile Ngxeke by technical knockout in a historic open-air event in Mexico City.

His victory not only establishes him internationally, but also reinforces the strength of Mexican boxing in one of its most emblematic divisions.

Mexico celebrates a new world champion

Saturday night December 13 was a memorable one for Jose “Chapulin” Salas. The Tijuana native entered the ring as a challenger and left as a world champion, after the referee stopped the fight in the seventh round. The fight, held at the esplanade of the Gustavo A. Madero City Hall, had a setting full of symbolism, far from the luxury arenas, but deeply connected with the tradition of national pugilism.

Although the stoppage generated complaints in the challenger’s corner, Salas’ performance was solid and dominant throughout the seven rounds.
