Police have charged a man with attempted murder in the shooting of New York Jets player Kris Boyd. Frederick Green was taken into custody late Monday and faces additional charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Boyd, 29, was shot in the abdomen shortly after 2 a.m. on November 16 in midtown Manhattan. Boyd and teammates Irvin Charles and Jamien Sherwood had just left a nightclub when a group mocked their clothing, leading to a confrontation that escalated into a shooting, police said.
During the incident, Boyd and his companions were unarmed. Surveillance footage captured by Leeroy Johnson shows police surrounding Boyd on the ground before treating him and transporting him via stretcher to an ambulance, where he was taken to a nearby hospital.
Authorities confirmed on Tuesday, December 9 that Green is expected to appear in court later that day, with his name revealed after police previously identified a “person of interest” but withheld the information until formal charges were filed.
It remains unclear if the 20-year-old Green has retained legal counsel, according to law enforcement sources. Despite the incident, Boyd later visited the Jets‘ facility, surprising teammates and attending a special teams meeting.
He was already sidelined for the season with a shoulder injury, which had prevented him from appearing in games this year, meaning the shooting occurred before he had a chance to suit up for New York.
Boyd began his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings, later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, and joined Houston‘s practice squad before signing with the Jets earlier this year.
“God is real, God is powerful,” Boyd posted to Instagram. “I’m sorry I have no words at the moment…
“Just grateful! I’m coming along, starting to breathe on my own now. Sincerely appreciate everyone!”
Jets coach Aaron Glenn shared relief over Boyd‘s recovery, focusing on the player’s family in the immediate aftermath.
“The first thing I thought about,” Glenn told media. “He just had a kid and I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK.
“That’s the only thing that went through my mind. I’m happy the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits. His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Jets crushed by Dolphins in Week 14
Meanwhile in Week 14, the Jets fell 34-10 to the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium, losing quarterback Tyrod Taylor to a groin injury early. Brady Cook stepped in, completing 14 of 30 passes for 163 yards while throwing two interceptions and taking six sacks.
Miami surged ahead with 21 points in the first quarter, taking control from the outset despite New York‘s desire for revenge after their Week 4 defeat, which had also seen Tyreek Hill suffer a serious leg injury.
Isaiah Williams energized the Jets with a 78-yard punt return touchdown, becoming only the third player in franchise history to record two punt-return scores in a single season. However, his efforts weren’t enough to prevent a lopsided AFC East loss for New York.
Later in the second quarter, trailing 24-7, Williams drew a 39-yard pass interference penalty on Minkah Fitzpatrick, giving the Jets a red-zone opportunity. Cook‘s next throw, however, was picked off by Rasul Douglas, leaving New York still down by 17 at halftime.
Chris Banjo‘s special teams unit created some excitement in the third quarter with a successful fake punt.
Malachi Moore pitched a 20-yard speed option to Isaiah Davis, moving the offense to Miami‘s seven-yard line, but the Jets settled for a 31-yard field goal after John Metchie III dropped a scoring opportunity.
But it was too late as the Dolphins dictated the game early and never looked back. New York‘s opponents, the Dolphins, dominated offensively, controlling both the ground and air attacks.
Miami outgained the Jets 358-207 in total yards and 239-65 on the ground. Next week, New York will travel to the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first game of a two-game road trip.
Despite injuries and a tough defeat, Glenn is hopeful the Jets can regroup, adjust, and finish the season on a stronger note as they try to salvage momentum.
