Who is better for Joe Theismann, Allen or Mahomes?

Neither the Buffalo Bills nor the Kansas City Chiefs has shown the level of consistency required to be viewed as serious contenders for Super Bowl LX. Both teams have fallen short of expectations throughout the 2025 season.

Each is struggling to find a clear path to the postseason. Josh Allen has endured more than his share of setbacks behind a weakened offensive line that provides him nothing but trouble. On every play, he seems forced to run for his life, a situation that has led to costly mistakes.

On the Chiefs’ side, things are not much better. Patrick Mahomes is in a similarly critical situation as he tries to produce positive results. His most reliable playmakers have not been performing at the level expected of them.

In short, both quarterbacks are facing serious difficulties in 2025, and if they fail to win their remaining four games, they may end up watching the postseason from home, or from whatever destination they choose for an early vacation.

With the struggles surrounding these two passers, who are always praised before each season begins, their legacies could take a hit if they fail to reach the playoffs. Against this bleak backdrop, Joe Theismann, one of the NFL’s most respected voices, stepped in to give his perspective on who is the better quarterback.

Joe Theismann gives his verdict on who is better between Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes

The criticism has been particularly harsh on both quarterbacks, but especially on Mahomes, whose every mistake is scrutinized. In response, the legendary Joe Theismann joined the discussion.

I’ve watched Patrick for years.”… “I think he’s the best quarterback in football. People can argue with Josh about it, but I’m going to take Patrick.

Joe Theisman

Theismann said.

This only adds fuel to the debate that has existed since 2018, the year both quarterbacks entered the NFL. Allen holds the advantage in head-to-head matchups with a 5-1 record, but that seems irrelevant when postseason appearances and Super Bowl victories are considered.

Mahomes also dominates where it matters most. In the playoffs, the Chiefs’ quarterback leads Allen with a 4-0 record.

For Theismann, even though Josh Allen is the reigning MVP, Mahomes possesses better pure quarterbacking abilities. Allen, meanwhile, is considered far more athletic.

Despite Mahomes’ current struggles, which do not reflect his true greatness, his three championship titles and two MVP awards outweigh the impact of one down year.

According to Theismann, what happened in Week 14 against the Houston Texans was not entirely Mahomes’ fault. He was never able to settle in against the opponent’s powerful and aggressive defensive front. The same situation affected Allen, who suffered eight sacks in that game.

What’s next for the Chiefs

Kansas City faces a difficult road in its pursuit of a postseason berth. They trail the Texans by one game, Buffalo by three, and the Los Angeles Chargers by another three. Even the Colts hold an advantage over them.

With such a scenario, many things must go in their favor if they intend to achieve their primary objective of reaching the playoffs. Unfortunately, they no longer have time to recover.

  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • Tennessee Titans
  • Denver Broncos
  • Las Vegas Raiders

These are their final matchups. Even if they win all four and other results align, it seems increasingly likely that the Mahomes era will experience its first postseason absence.
