Repeating a championship is one of the greatest achievements for any team in any league in the world. The WNBA is no exception. The intense competition and the desire to win of all the players make it difficult to achieve a double championship. Even so, there are three teams that have already achieved it.
In 27 years of history, the WNBA has had 11 different champions. Its postseason and finals format has undergone several adjustments throughout its history to improve competitiveness and give a better show to its fans.
These changes allowed several teams to achieve multiple championships in a very short time, but they also prevented the league from becoming a show for a few teams. So far, seven teams have won more than one title in their history, but only three have achieved the coveted double championship, led by the historic Houston Comets.
The history of the double championships
The WNBA played its first tournament in 1997, and after an exciting first season, the Houston Comets lifted the championship trophy. The team would win a total of four consecutive titles between 1997 and 2000 before its demise in 2008, thus creating the first dynasty of the league.
The retirement of the legendary Cynthia Cooper in 2000, followed by the departure of several key players, caused the decline of the Comets. But it was not long before a team emerged to fill the void. The Los Angeles Sparks not only created a new dynasty but won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002.
The growth of the WNBA, the change in the Finals format-now a three-out-of-five-game playoff-and the demise of several founding franchises prevented a back-to-back championship for 20 years. However, the Las Vegas Aces broke the curse by winning in 2022 and 2023.
Will there be a new two-time champion?
While there are four other teams with multiple championships, none have done so back-to-back. Even the Aces saw their hopes of a three-peat dashed by being eliminated in this year’s semifinals.
After eliminating Las Vegas, the New York Libertyis fighting for its first title ever. On the other side of the court, the Minnesota Lynx are seeking their fifth championship after winning in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017.
Regardless of who wins, we’ll have to wait at least a year to see if either of them has what it takes to create a new dynasty in the WNBA.
