The world news this Thursday is the appointment of the new Pope following the death of Francis I, who is now succeeded by Leo XIV.

But this appointment of a more social and political nature also has its ties to the world of sports, as is the case with MLB.

Robert Prevost’s team in MLB

Robert Prevost, the name of the new pope, is a baseball fan born in Chicago and there seems to be some dispute as to which team he supports in the city: the Cubs or the White Sox.

The first reports indicate that the Pontiff is a fan of the Chicago Cubs, despite growing up on the south side of the city, where the White Sox play

But then news began to circulate in which the Pope’s brother, John Prevost, denied this information and said that he supported the Chicago White Sox.

“He never was a Cubs fan. I don’t know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan,” he told WGN, a Chicago television station, adding that their mother was a Cubs fan, while their father supported the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Vatican has its first American Pope

Beyond the team that Pope Leo XIV supports, the fact is that he is the first Pope to be born in the United States and with a strong connection in Peru, where he spent several decades in Chiclayo.
