The Super Bowl is not only the most-watched sporting event in the United States; it is also a stage for historic moments, unforgettable performances, and scorelines that have been etched into fans’ memories.

Over the years, some editions have stood out for their defensive intensity, while others have turned into true offensive showcases. In that context, an inevitable question arises among NFL fans: which Super Bowl was the highest-scoring in history?

To answer it, it is necessary to look back at the context, the key players, and the circumstances that shaped that extraordinary game.

Highest scoring Super Bowl

This honor belongs to the XXIX edition, where the San Francisco 49ers defeated the then San Diego Chargers by 49-26, for a total of 75 points scored in the duel.

On that night, QB Steve Young broke the record for most touchdown passes in a Super Bowl with six, surpassing the legendary Joe Montana, who threw four touchdown passes in the XXIV edition of the Big Game.

The second place on the list is a more recent game, with Super Bowl LII between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots battling to a 41-33 score to total 74 points, falling one short of tying the record.

That edition is best remembered for the QB’s duel between Nick Foles and Tom Brady, in which the former came out victorious taking the MVP of that game, with three touchdown passes and one interception, where Brady also had the same amount of touchdowns through the air, but no interceptions.

Super Bowl Blowouts

The most lopsided Super Bowl in history saw Joe Montana and the 49ers absolutely dismantle John Elway’s Broncos 55 to 10, a 45-point difference.
