The NBA recently concluded its 2024-2025 season with a thrilling championship series that saw the Oklahoma City Thunder claim the title in a hard-fought Game 7. With the season officially behind us-and for some teams, long since over following early playoff exits-the focus has now shifted to offseason rebuilding ahead of the new campaign.

Free agency is just around the corner, and it’s a crucial phase for franchises looking to strengthen their rosters. Teams must be sharp-eyed in identifying players who can not only deliver strong performances but also quickly develop chemistry with their new teammates, ensuring that results start coming from the very first games of this upcoming era.

Key dates to watch in NBA free agency

  • Day after the final game: Teams can begin negotiating with their own players set to become free agents.
  • June 30: At 6:00 p.m. ET, teams may begin discussions with all prospective free agents across the league.
  • July 6: Starting at 12:01 p.m. ET, NBA teams can officially sign free agents.

In the coming days, expect sports debate shows, television networks, and streaming platforms to be dominated by NBA free agency talk. Without question, this is one of the most thrilling spectacles of the offseason-and one that fans eagerly anticipate.

Across the country, NBA enthusiasts are buzzing to find out which new faces will join their favorite franchises and to speculate about what the future holds.

Key free agency terms every NBA fan should know

  • Restricted Free Agent: These players can be signed by any team, but their current franchise retains what’s known as the “right of first refusal.” That means if the player receives an offer from a new team, the current team can match that offer and retain the player under the same terms.
  • Offer Sheets: If a restricted free agent wants to join a new team, they and the prospective team sign an offer sheet that outlines the terms-this must be for at least two years and include the player’s benefits. This offer is then sent to the current team, which has two days to match it. If they do, the player stays with them under the new terms. If they don’t, the player joins the new team.
  • Qualifying Offers: In order for a player to be categorized as a restricted free agent, their current team must present a qualifying offer between the day after the final game of the NBA Finals and June 29. This is a one-year guaranteed contract offer that becomes official if the player accepts it. It ensures that the team isn’t holding the player’s rights without offering a real deal.
  • Unrestricted Free Agent: These players can freely negotiate with and sign for any team. Once a contract is signed, the player is officially part of the new organization, with no further rights held by their previous team.
