Kayla Nicole seems to never get rid of controversies surrounding her name. The former longtime girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce is once again at the center of an online firestorm. This time, the backlash she faces is not only about something she said or did in the past, it is about how she dealt with it in the present.
According to The SportsRush, Nicole has been accused by online haters of using ChatGPT or another AI tool to craft her recent apology for resurfaced offensive tweets from long ago. The claim has created a second wave of outrage and debate over her responsibility and authenticity in her apologies, amid the growing role of artificial intelligence in public communication.
Her old controversial tweets resurfaced
Nicole’s situation began earlier this week when online users brough back to life old tweets she wrote between 2010 and 2014, years when she was not in the public spotlight. The posts included content like racial remarks, homophobic language, and offensive stereotypes targeting communities like Asian and Indian.
As the screenshots spread like a virus across social media, Nicole was forced to delete her X account and later issued an apology through her Instagram Story. In that statement, she said she was “ashamed” of the language she once used and emphasized that her current values “are rooted in love, respect, and empathy.“
Use of AI in her apologies?
The apology was meant to calm the situation, but unfortunately for her it did not. Instead, some users copied and pasted Nicole’s message into online AI-detection tools, which returned results labeling it “100% AI-generated.”
The SportsRush reports that this fueled claims that Nicole had used ChatGPT or any similar tool to write her apology, an allegation that quickly overshadowed the apology itself as many saw it as a false regret.
That is why for many users her apology suggests that the remorse was not entirely true.
However, some others supported her saying that the claims of an AI-generated text feel like a distraction, in an attempt to delegitimize her try to take responsibility for what she once did.
