With only five days remaining in the 2026 MLB regular season, the postseason field is beginning to take shape, although several important races remain undecided.
Six teams have already secured playoff berths: the Tampa Bay Rays, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the American League, along with the Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves in the National League.
The Rays have already clinched the AL East and the American League’s No. 1 seed. In the National League, Milwaukee, Los Angeles and Atlanta have all secured their respective division titles.
That leaves several teams battling for the remaining postseason places, while others are still competing for better seeding and the valuable first-round bye.
The current AL playoff field has the Rays, Cleveland Guardians and Houston Astros positioned as division winners. The Yankees, Red Sox and Chicago White Sox currently hold the three wild-card places.
Cleveland has a one-game advantage over Chicago in the AL Central, while Houston and Texas are tied at the top of the AL West. The Astros own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rangers, giving them the edge if the clubs finish with identical records.
In the NL, the Brewers, Dodgers and Braves have already won their divisions. The Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres currently occupy the three wild-card positions.
Those three clubs are tied, creating one of the closest races entering the final week. Arizona remains four games back and still has a mathematical path into the postseason.
Which teams can clinch Wednesday?
Several contenders can officially secure playoff spots Wednesday, depending on the results of other games.
Cleveland can clinch a postseason berth by defeating Boston if Texas loses to the New York Mets. The Guardians can also qualify if they beat Boston and Houston loses to Seattle.
The White Sox can clinch with a victory over Kansas City combined with a Texas defeat. The Dodgers can secure no worse than the National League’s No. 2 seed with a win against San Diego or an Atlanta loss to Cincinnati.
Meanwhile the Cubs can punch their ticket by beating Miami or if Arizona loses to Colorado. San Diego has a more complicated route: the Padres need to defeat the Dodgers while Arizona also loses to Colorado. Philadelphia can likewise clinch with a win over Milwaukee and an Arizona defeat.
The postseason format adds another layer to the standings. The two division winners with the best records in each league receive byes through the Wild Card Series and home-field advantage in the Division Series.
The third division winner hosts the lowest-seeded wild card, while the remaining wild-card clubs meet in best-of-three series beginning Sept. 29. The Division Series is scheduled to start Oct. 3.
Tiebreakers could become crucial during the final days. MLB no longer uses a separate tiebreaker game for postseason qualification.
Instead, ties are settled mathematically, beginning with head-to-head records. With several races separated by only a few games, the final stretch could significantly reshape both the playoff bracket and the order of the seeds.
