Although his intention was different, Tarik Skubal will ultimately not continue with United States national baseball team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The decision was practically already made, as the plan from the beginning was to use the ace of the Detroit Tigers for just one start before returning to his MLB team’s camp.

What did the American League Cy Young winner say?

“I hate it, but I’ll be the first to sign up for the 2028 Olympics and the next World Baseball Classic… I don’t think I’m walking away. I guess I am, but I’ll be back for the semifinals and finals to enjoy the moment with the guys,” said Tarik Skubal before Team USA’s crucial matchup against Mexico national baseball team.

Ultimately, the Detroit Tigers ace decided to stick with the original plan and return to his team’s camp, a move confirmed by Team USA manager Mark DeRosa.

His only start in the tournament came in the United States’ 9-1 victory over Great Britain national baseball team, where Skubal allowed a home run on his very first pitch of the game to Nate Eaton.

Despite that early moment, Skubal quickly settled in. Over three innings, he allowed one run on two hits (both by Eaton), issued no walks, and struck out five batters, showcasing why he is considered one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball today.

Meanwhile, Team USA has started the World Baseball Classic with a 2-0 record, recording convincing wins over Brazil national baseball team and Great Britain. The team will face Mexico on Monday night before closing the group stage against Italy national baseball team on Tuesday.
