After several days of negotiations, the Indianapolis Colts and Daniel Jones finally reached a historic agreement on a two-year contract worth up to $100 million, making it the largest two-year deal in the history of the National Football League. Following a strong start to last season, Jones is now officially back with the franchise.
Last season, Jones originally signed a one-year, $14 million contract to serve as a backup. However, he won the starting job during the preseason and quickly impressed. The Colts even reached an 8-1 record early in the year. The problem came afterward with injuries-first a fractured fibula, and later the injury that ultimately ended his season: a torn Achilles tendon.
After the injury, the Indianapolis Colts lost momentum and eventually missed the playoffs. In 2025, Jones threw for 3,101 yards, 24 total touchdowns, and eight interceptions, the best numbers of his career. Indianapolis fans quickly fell in love with him, and now he is back for at least two more seasons.
Daniel Jones hopes to be ready for Week 1
A torn Achilles tendon is one of the most dangerous injuries for any athlete. Several National Football League players have suffered it, including Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins. Both quarterbacks experienced reduced mobility after returning to the field. However, they were both over 35 years old, while Jones is currently 28.
Jones appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and delivered a message to Colts fans that suggests he could be available for Week 1:
“My goal is to be back by Week 1 and be ready to go,” Jones said. “I think that’s what we’re working toward. It should be achievable. It’s all a process, and we’ll keep checking the boxes and working with the guys here with the Colts. I feel good about it.”
Despite Jones’ effort in his rehabilitation and his goal of returning by Week 1, many players need close to a full year to recover from this injury. If there are any setbacks, the quarterback who would likely lead the Colts’ offense is Riley Leonard, who showed flashes of talent-especially in the final game of the season against the Houston Texans.
The roster also still includes Anthony Richardson, who will enter the final year of his rookie contract. If the Colts cannot find a trade partner for him, it is very likely that the team could decide to release him.
