Just a few hours earlier, there was maximum tension over the possibility of seeing a tremendous failure from Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. A Team Mexico victory would have forced a tiebreaker scenario to decide qualification by creating a three-way tie in the standings-something that ultimately never happened.
Team Italy stepped up again, this time with a 9-1 victory, securing Team USA’s spot in the next round of the WBC. However, one of the key protagonists of the night delivered a direct message after the game.
Vinnie Pasquantino’s message to USA
“That was unbelievable, huh,” Vinnie Pasquantino said in a postgame interview. “You’re welcome, USA. We were thinking of you guys, over at your hotel. We were thinking of you guys, so glad you guys can join us in the party.”
Italy’s victory not only sealed first place in Group B, but also guaranteed their spot in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals.
The next phase of the WBC knockout stage will be played this weekend. Team USA will face their northern neighbor, Team Canada-the No. 1 seed from Group A-on Friday at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas.
Meanwhile, Team Italy, which advanced as Group B leaders, will take on Team Puerto Rico on Saturday in the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals, also at Daikin Park.
The winners of both matchups will earn their tickets to the WBC semifinals in Miami, keeping their World Baseball Classic title hopes alive.
