What is the NFL Black Monday?

Black Monday is a highly discussed date in sports media as it marks the beginning of a period of significant changes in the NFL, with coaches seeking new teams and franchises trying to restructure for the future.

The term is used because, at the end of the season, teams that failed to meet their goals or had disappointing performances often make drastic decisions to reorganize and improve for the next season.

What is NFL Black Monday?

The term Black Monday commonly refers to the first Monday after the end of the regular season.

While some coaches and general managers prepare for the Wild Card round of the playoffs, others have to pack their bags in their offices after being fired.

NFL teams rarely waste time getting rid of coaches who no longer fit their model for success. Some coaches and executives could still be fired beyond Monday, especially if they disappoint in the NFL playoffs.

Who are the candidates to leave their positions in 2026?

One of the most closely watched situations involves Aaron Glenn of the New York Jets, whose tenure has been defined by inconsistency and unmet expectations. Despite preseason optimism, the Jets’ continued struggles have raised questions about whether the franchise will seek a new leadership direction heading into the 2026 season.

Another coach under pressure is Jonathan Gannon of the Arizona Cardinals. Hired to oversee a long-term rebuild, Gannon has faced a challenging season marked by losses and limited progress in the standings. While the organization has publicly emphasized patience, a poor finish could prompt Cardinals ownership to reconsider whether continuity remains the best path forward.

Rounding out the list is Pete Carroll of the Las Vegas Raiders, whose situation has generated significant attention given his experience and reputation. If the Raiders finish the season well below expectations, ownership may opt for a full reset, prioritizing a long-term rebuild over continuity. While Carroll remains one of the most respected figures in the league, Black Monday has historically shown that even established coaches are not immune to change in the NFL.
