The landscape of the Western Conference has shifted significantly over the last month, as the Los Angeles Lakers have abandoned their mid-season inconsistency in favor of a dominant, defensive-minded identity.

Following a convincing 124-116 victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, the Lakers officially moved into third place in the West.

This surge is the culmination of a ten-game stretch in which the team has won nine matchups, silencing skeptics who previously viewed them as a play-in caliber squad prone to late-game collapses and overtime struggles.

This transformation has caught the eye of franchise legend Magic Johnson, who took to social media to highlight the systemic changes implemented by first-year head coach JJ Redick.

Johnson noted that the team’s success isn’t just a byproduct of offensive “heroics” but a fundamental shift in how they guard the perimeter and manage their interior rotations.

The Lakers, once ranked near the bottom of the league in defensive efficiency, have managed to squeeze “grit” from a roster that critics previously labeled as having limited depth.

Redick’s defensive system drives top-10 statistical turnaround

The statistical evidence of this Purple and Gold revival is striking when comparing their season-long averages to their recent output.

While the Lakers‘ overall season defensive rating sits at a modest 115.7 (ranked 20th in the NBA), that number has sharpened to 110.8 over the last ten games, good for 8th in the league. Even more impressive is their performance through the month of March, where the defensive rating has dipped to 109.7, placing them 7th overall.

This defensive “bite” was on full display in their back-to-back containment of a high-scoring Rockets team, holding Houston to just 104 points twice in a single week.

“The Lakers are contenders in the West because of their outstanding improvement on defense,” Johnson wrote in a widely shared tweet.

“It’s been a total team effort, starting with man-to-man defense, and their rotations and communication have been excellent. It says a lot about the great job JJ Redick is doing! The Lakers are the most exciting team to watch in the NBA!”
