What happened for the Mexico vs Portugal match to lose part of its appeal

The excitement around the Mexico vs Portugal friendly did not disappear overnight, but it has clearly shifted. What once felt like a must-see event for many fans in Mexico now carries a different kind of attention, one shaped as much by what is missing as by what surrounds the match.

The first change came with the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward was expected to be the central figure of the match and the main reason many fans had been following the buildup. His right hamstring injury, suffered in February, ruled him out of the trip and immediately altered the level of excitement surrounding the game.

But the shift did not stop there

On March 26, just two days before kickoff, Ronaldo shared a post on social media with the message: “Good to be back! Looking good,” after continuing his recovery process in Madrid. The image did not show him returning to competition, but it was enough to signal progress.

The timing, however, created a different reaction. By then, the expectation around the match had already changed. His message did not bring him back to the field in Mexico, but it did remind fans of what the event had originally promised and what it would not deliver.

At the same time, another factor has begun to shape how the match is being experienced.

In Mexico City, authorities will implement mobility restrictions around the stadium, allowing access only to residents with identification, emergency vehicles, and authorized public transportation. For fans, this changes the way matchday unfolds, from how they arrive to how they move around the venue.

These measures are part of the broader operational framework set by FIFA ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The idea behind them is to prevent thousands of vehicles from trying to reach the same area at the same time, which could overwhelm city streets. By limiting car access, authorities can ensure that emergency services and team transportation move without delays, while also keeping crowd flow more controlled.

The match is set to take place on March 28 at the newly renovated Estadio Banorte, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of the most iconic venues in the sport.
