Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship by inviting a dedicated fan to Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

This act of kindness follows a distressing incident where the fan, Hans Perez, was harassed and pelted with garbage by New York Knicks supporters in New York City.

The incident occurred on May 16, 2025, when Perez, a lifelong Pacers fan and firefighter, was walking through the streets of New York wearing a Haliburton jersey. Following the Knicks’ Game 6 victory over the Boston Celtics, a group of Knicks fans targeted Perez, throwing bags of trash at him and verbally abusing him. A video of the incident quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and prompting a response from Haliburton.

Haliburton’s generous invitation

In a heartfelt gesture, Haliburton appeared on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on May 19 to personally invite Perez and a guest to Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Pacers and the Knicks. Haliburton expressed his desire to ensure Perez felt supported and appreciated.

“I want to personally bring you and a plus-one out here to come to Game 4 here in Indiana. I’ll bring you guys out here, put you guys up, get you guys seats to the game.

“The Pacers, everybody in our organization wants to make sure you’re taken care of. The whole team is excited to meet you; it’s all we’ve been talking about. Everybody’s seen the video,” Haliburton explained.

Perez, visibly moved by the invitation, expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm. As a firefighter, he mentioned coordinating with his department to secure time off to attend the game. The Pacers’ organization has since confirmed arrangements for Perez and his guest to travel to Indianapolis, with accommodations and game tickets provided.

This act of kindness has been widely praised, highlighting the positive impact athletes can have beyond the court. Haliburton’s response underscores the importance of community and support, especially in the face of adversity. Hollywood star Ben Stiller posted his praise on his X account, writing: “I appreciate this by Halliburton. No one should ever treat fans of any team like this. NY is better than this. And this man is a firefighter.”

The Pacers are set to face the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, with Game 1 scheduled for May 21, 2025, at Madison Square Garden. The series marks the first time the Knicks have reached the Eastern Conference Finals … , adding to the excitement and intensity of the matchup.

As the series progresses, fans and players alike are reminded of the power of sports to unite and uplift communities, transcending the challenges and divisions that may arise.
