“We owe you an apology. You did your part”: Mets bow their heads to fans after dramatic elimination

The 2025 MLB season ended in the most painful way for the New York Mets, eliminated on the last day, with one of the highest payrolls in Major League Baseball and a steep fall after a promising start. The team not only failed to make the playoffs, but also left enormous disappointment among its fans, who were dreaming of October.

Owner Steve Cohen was quick to face reality. With a direct message on social media, he apologized to the fans for the debacle of the season: “I owe you an apology. You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do ours,” he wrote on X. His statement was a public acknowledgment of the collapse and that, despite the investment, the project did not work.

Steve Cohen admits mistakes after Mets’ elimination in 2025

After the loss to the Marlins in game 162, the Mets were left out of the postseason depending on an unlikely combination of results. Despite leading MLB with a 45-24 record in mid-June, the team played the last three months as one of the worst in baseball. The free fall included injuries, questionable decisions and a noticeable disconnect on the diamond.

Cohen promised a thorough review of the sporting project: “We will determine the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team did not perform up to expectations,” he said. He also thanked the fans for their dedication during the campaign and called the result “unacceptable,” assuring that the passion of the fans continues to motivate the organization to improve.

What’s next for the Mets in 2025-26 free agency?

The offseason is expected to be hectic, and one of the main topics will be the future of Pete Alonso, who has already announced that he intends to test free agency. His departure would be an additional blow to a roster that needs to strengthen its pitching staff and find stability on the bench.

The team will also have to decide whether to keep manager Carlos Mendoza, who has been questioned for his lack of reaction to the team’s collapse. Meanwhile, figures such as general manager David Stearns are already in talks with the owner to define the way forward and avoid another failure in 2026.

Steve Cohen has faced the music, but now fans are waiting for action. The talent on the roster is there, but the execution was poor and the direction erratic.
