In a change that shocked the entire NBA, Damian Lillard was cut by the Milwaukee Bucks, and now the Golden State Warriors look like they might sign the nine-time All-Star.
The Bucks chose to let go of Lillard to clear cap space by spreading out the $113 million left on Lillard’s deal. This was to get free-agent center Myles Turner and build their team around Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Why the Bucks let Lillard go
Lillard’s time in Milwaukee had health problems. He missed games with a blood clot and then torned his Achilles in the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers. This bad turn might keep him out for most or all of the 2025-26 season.
Rather than contributing to his massive contract while he recovers, the Bucks let him go and spread the cost over five years. This move shows their desire and obligation to stay strong in the Eastern Conference but not give up future picks.
Warriors look closely for Lillard
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears says the Golden State Warriors have already shown they are interested in Lillard. He grew up nearby and liked the team as a kid. Coming off a playoff loss and wanting to build around Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green, Lillard could be really helpful even if he is not available to play until late in the season.
“This is a guy that grew up going to games at Oracle Arena, sneaking into the media room getting sodas,” Spears said. “Hearing that the Warriors have interest in Dame is very interesting to Bay Area people.”
Risky choices
Putting Lillard alongside Curry is exciting but tricky. They both like having the ball, and Lillard’s injuries and age (he turns 35 this month) make it complex. Still, the Warriors may see Lillard as a valuable player long-term, possibly signing him for two years which lets him get better this season and come back strong in 2026.
Critics say that the Warriors, who need more players, cannot use up space and money on someone who might not play this year. But for a team trying to win now with older main players, the chance to add someone like Lillard might be worth it.
He is now free to choose his next team. Other teams like the Miami Heat and maybe a return to the Portland Trail Blazers are interested, but Golden State’s known quality, winning ways, and need for more scoring might put them ahead.
For now, the Warriors are waiting and watching.
