Warriors take precautions with Jimmy Butler’s ankle, but season opener looks secure

Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler has been managing an ankle issue throughout the preseason, but the team remains optimistic that the veteran star will be ready for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 21.

Despite tweaking his ankle during a recent practice, Butler’s injury is being described as minor, and the team is reportedly treating his status as “day-to-day.”

Butler did not suit up for Golden State’s fourth preseason matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers, sitting out as a precautionary measure. He also missed the prior game against the Lakers, although that absence was unrelated to the injury and was considered excused for personal reasons.

According to head coach Steve Kerr, the decision to rest Butler was simply to avoid aggravating the ankle sprain sustained during a Friday practice session.

Sources close to the team have indicated that while some swelling remains, there is no serious concern about Butler missing significant time. The Warriors’ medical staff is monitoring his condition, but the outlook remains positive, with strong expectations that Butler will be cleared to play when the season officially begins.

So far this preseason, the 36-year-old forward has played in two games, contributing 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists across 32 total minutes. Much like fellow veterans Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Butler has been easing into the action, prioritizing rhythm and conditioning while giving younger players an opportunity to get more minutes on the court.

Cautious approach as Warriors prioritize health for the long haul

While Butler’s situation seems manageable, the Warriors have shown a commitment to careful load management, especially for their veteran core. Butler, who joined the team last season, has a known history of pushing through injuries, but Golden State appears intent on preserving his health early to avoid long-term complications.

Last season, Butler appeared in 30 games for the Warriors, averaging 17.9 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 48% from the field. His presence on the court proved valuable, as the Warriors posted a 23-7 record in games he played.

The team ultimately advanced to the 2025 Western Conference semifinals before falling to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.

While Butler is expected to be ready, the team is slightly more concerned about Moses Moody, who is dealing with a calf injury and has already undergone imaging. Moody is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason, though Coach Kerr has downplayed the severity of the issue.

The Warriors are entering the season with high expectations and a strong veteran core. As Opening Night approaches, the organization’s focus remains on health and readiness. For now, all signs point to Jimmy Butler being on the floor and fully available when the Warriors meet the Lakers in Los Angeles.
