Warriors insider reveals trade scenarios involving Jonathan Kuminga

Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga has continued to establish himself as an important part of the team following an expanded role during the 2024-2025 season and playoffs.

During the regular season, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 30.5 percent from three-point range in 24.3 minutes of play.

His playoff performance maintained similar numbers, with 15.3 points per game, while improving to 48.4 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point distance over eight games.

Kuminga‘s production attracted interest from other teams during the offseason as a restricted free agent, but the Warriors chose to retain him.

The two sides agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract, though speculation regarding potential trades has persisted as Golden State evaluates opportunities to strengthen its roster.

Potential trade scenarios for Kuminga

Despite Kuminga‘s retention, trade discussions have centered on the possibility of acquiring additional “win-now” talent to complement the team’s veteran core.

With Stephen Curry still performing at a high level and Jimmy Butler entering his first full season with Golden State, the team could explore trades if an exceptional offer is presented.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, notable trade names connected to Kuminga include Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans.

While a deal for Giannis is virtually impossible due to his stature and contract, Murphy represents a more plausible target, albeit one that would likely require multiple assets beyond Kuminga.

Murphy averaged 21.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in 53 games last season, shooting 45.4 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from three-point range, and 88.7 percent from the free-throw line.

At 25, Murphy is entering the first year of a four-year, $112 million contract, keeping him under team control through 2029. Any trade for Murphy would require a significant package, underscoring Kuminga‘s value to the Warriors.

Kuminga proves his worth to the Warriors

Kuminga demonstrated his continued growth in Golden State‘s season-opening 119-109 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, who were missing LeBron James.

In 33 minutes, Kuminga contributed 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, shooting six-of-11 from the field. His performance drew praise from Curry, who highlighted Kuminga‘s versatility and importance to the team’s rotation.

If Kuminga maintains consistent all-around performances, the Warriors‘ decision to retain him this summer will be justified. His scoring, rebounding, and playmaking abilities provide flexibility in the roster, allowing the team to explore potential trades only if an extraordinary opportunity arises.

As Golden State progresses through the season, Kuminga‘s role will be pivotal in balancing player development, veteran leadership, and championship aspirations.

His performance, combined with the team’s strategic decisions, will influence both the Warriors‘ immediate competitiveness and long-term roster management.
