Warriors’ 2027 plans could shake up the NBA with superstar acquisition

The Golden State Warriors are setting the stage for a transformative move in the 2027 NBA free agency.

With both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic potentially entering free agency, the Warriors are positioning themselves to make a significant play for one or both of these MVP-caliber players.

Golden State’s front office is prioritizing financial flexibility to accommodate potential max contracts.

Currently, the team’s salary commitments for the 2027 offseason are minimal, with only Moses Moody’s $13.4 million and Buddy Hield’s $10 million player option on the books.

This strategic cap management allows the Warriors to pursue top-tier talent without the constraints of long-term financial obligations.

Jonathan Kuminga’s contract negotiations

A key factor in the Warriors‘ financial planning is the ongoing contract negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

The team has proposed a three-year, $75.2 million deal with a team option for the 2027-28 season, but Kuminga‘s camp is seeking a player option instead.

They’re confident in his All-Star-level ceiling and sees next summer’s free-agent market as a chance to exercise greater control over his career trajectory.

According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater and Shams Charania, he has prepared “loss-of-value insurance” in case he signs the qualifying offer and is intrigued by the freedom unrestricted free agency would provide.

“He isn’t obsessing over every lost dollar in the moment and sees the qualifying offer as a clean vehicle for career control,” the report noted.

This impasse highlights the Warriors‘ reluctance to commit long-term, ensuring they maintain the flexibility needed for future acquisitions.

Kuminga‘s flashes of brilliance were on full display during last season’s playoffs, particularly when Stephen Curry was sidelined.

Potential superstar acquisitions

The Warriors‘ interest in Antetokounmpo and Jokic is not merely speculative. Both players have player options for the 2027-28 season, and their future with their current teams remains uncertain.

Antetokounmpo has previously expressed a desire for a more competitive environment, while Jokic‘s contract situation with the Denver Nuggets could lead to a change.

The Warriors are closely monitoring these developments, preparing to make a compelling offer should either player become available.

Integrating a player of Antetokounmpo‘s or Jokic‘s caliber would significantly impact the Warriors‘ roster dynamics.

Pairing one of these stars with Stephen Curry could create one of the most formidable duos in NBA history.

However, such a move would also necessitate adjustments to the current roster, potentially involving trades or restructured contracts to accommodate the new addition.

As the 2025-26 season approaches, all eyes will be on the Warriors‘ roster decisions and cap management strategies.

Their actions in the coming months will provide insight into whether they are indeed positioning themselves for a blockbuster acquisition in 2027.
