Von Miller signs with Washington Commanders: Veteran pass rusher joins NFC contenders

Von Miller, one of the NFL’s most accomplished pass rushers, is set to join the Washington Commanders on a one-year contract. The 36-year-old linebacker announced his decision on social media, signaling the beginning of his 16th season in the league.

Miller, who spent the last three years with the Buffalo Bills, is now focused on bringing his experience and leadership to Washington as they aim for a Super Bowl appearance.

Miller’s NFL career began in 2011 when he was selected second overall by the Denver Broncos. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the league’s premier edge rushers, accumulating 129.5 sacks, which places him 16th on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Along the way, he has earned eight Pro Bowl selections and been named a first-team All-Pro three times.

The crowning achievements of Miller’s career came in the postseason. He was named Super Bowl 50 MVP after leading the Broncos’ defense to a victory over the Carolina Panthers, and he added another Super Bowl title to his resume with the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LVI.

Miller’s ability to perform in clutch moments has earned him a reputation as one of the most feared pass rushers in NFL history.

Last season, Miller played 13 games for the Bills, recording six sacks and 17 tackles. Despite serving a four-game suspension due to a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, he returned to form in the latter half of the season. His performance helped Buffalo secure a strong playoff run, and his ability to pressure quarterbacks remained a key strength.

Commanders’ defensive strategy

Miller’s arrival in Washington is a strategic move for the Commanders, who are looking to bolster their pass rush as they aim for a deeper playoff run in 2025. The team is coming off a strong 2024 season, finishing with a 12-5 record and winning their first playoff game since 2005.

However, they lost standout pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr., who led the team with 10 sacks last season, to the Dallas Cowboys in free agency.

To address this gap, the Commanders signed several key defensive free agents, including Deatrich Wise, Javon Kinlaw, and Jacob Martin. Miller, with his wealth of experience and leadership, will join this revamped defensive front and bring a significant boost to the team’s ability to pressure quarterbacks.

As Washington heads into the 2025 season, Miller’s presence on the defensive line will be crucial. His experience in high-pressure situations, including his two Super Bowl victories, makes him a valuable asset for a Commanders team eager to return to championship contention.

If Miller can stay healthy and continue to play at a high level, Washington’s defense could become one of the league’s most formidable units, making the team a serious contender for the Super Bowl.
