Fourth seed Coco Gauff came back from a set down to beat Yulia Starodubtseva in Beijing on Thursday.
The American found herself under pressure as she lost three of her service games and suffered seven double faults to lose the first set 6-2 – it was the first set she had dropped in the competition.
But found some strength to finish the following two sets by the same score line.
She will face Paula Badosa in the semi-finals.
