At the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Victor Wembanyama adressed the rumors that linked the San Antonio Spurs to a possibe blockbuster Kevin Durant trade. In his first interview since the NBA season ended, the 21-year-old franchise cornerstone made a clear statement, “Breaking up a young core for a single player rarely works”, asserting his belief that team balance should remain paramount.

San Antonio builds team around Wembanyama

Wembanyama emphasized the Spurs’ legacy of sustainable builds over one-off moves. “I want the Spurs to be a balanced team, they’ve been masters of that in the past”, he told insider Maxime Aubin. The organization reportedly considered trading foundational players like Devin Vassell or Harrison Barnes to acquire the veteran Durant from Phoenix. However, Durant ultimately landed in Houston instead.

Spurs GM Brian Wright echoed Wembanyama’s viewpoint after the 2025 NBA Draft, “We put one foot in fornt of the other…head down. And hoepfully we look up someday and we’re right where we want to be.” The messaging was clear, develop the young nucleus around Wembanyama.

Wembanyama trusts the Spurs’ tradition

By rejecting the Durant deal, San Antonio is reasserting its commitment to long-term, sustainable vision. Instead of sacrificing depth for one superstar, the Spurs prefer gradual growth led by Wembanyama himself. This mirrors the organization’s hystorical philosophy: depth, discipline, and unselfish play.

The Frenchman resonates with his direction, not only as the most talented piece of the puzzle, but also as the player embracing this patient rebuild. His statement reinforces trsut in the front office and signals to fans that “Spurs basketball” isn’t going away.
