Veteran QB coach calls out Deion Sanders amid Browns QB shuffle

Deion Sanders is regularly the talk of the town. Whether it’s College Football or the NFL, whether it’s because of his sons, recent rookies that entered the league, or it’s about the university where he runs the football program, the Colorado Buffaloes. It was recently known that he is close to returning from battling an ilness since April of this year. but the story now is that he was called out, criticized, heard that one before?

Veteran QB coach Quincy Avery, who trains Browns’ signal-caller Deshaun Watson, recently took aim at ‘Coach Prime’, questioning whther Sanders ever really coached for anyone but his sons. On ‘The Maggie and Perloff Show’, Avery suggested that the Colorado head coach might have treated college coaching more as a vehicle to advance his own family than a true passion for player development. “Was he doing this the whole time to prop his sun up?”, Avery asked, adding that’ll be telling to see how Sanders perform without a family QB on his roster this year.

Sander’s coaching legacy under scrutiny

Deion Sanders, the Hall of Famer turned coach, built his college reputation at Jackson State before taking the Buffaloes jobjob; both programs featuring his sons, Shedeur and Shilo. Avery’s critique highlights 2025 as Deion’s first season without a son playing for him at Colorado, raising questions about whether his coaching drive runs deeper than family ties.

Even though it’s a valid point, the talent his sons have is undeniable, both able to be selected in this year’s Draft. Shedeur even at times being ranked as a top QB prospect in the league, something that ultimately didn’t go as planned. Plus, Avery just happens to coach the rookie’s competition, Deshaun Watson, although he’s out for the start of the season with an achilles injury. Sort of coincidental.

Stakes are high for Shedeur and Deion Sanders in 2025

The former Colorado QB, a fifth-round pick by Cleveland, continues to navigate early NFL growing pains both on and off the field, including recent speeding tickets. Mentoring from Watson and coaching staff will be vital for his development amid the pressure to justify his pedigree and draft position. Amidst controversy, Avery praised his trainee Watson for his leadership with the Browns. Reportedly, he has taken the rookie Sanders under his wing.

Meanwhile, Avery’s words place additional scrutiny on Deion Sanders as he leads Colorado without his sons this year. Whether his coaching identity is anchored in fatherhood or genuine program-building will be closely watched.
