Venus Williams is set to make a remarkable comeback at the 2025 US Open, marking her return to Grand Slam singles after a two-year hiatus.

At 45, she will become the oldest woman to compete in the US Open singles since Renée Richards in 1981.

Williams, a two-time US Open singles champion with titles in 2000 and 2001, has received a wildcard entry into the tournament.

This marks her 25th main draw appearance at the US Open, underscoring her enduring presence in the sport.

A comeback fueled by determination

After a 16-month absence from the tour, Williams returned to competitive tennis in July 2025 at the Mubadala Citi DC Open.

In her opening match, she defeated world No. 35 Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4, becoming the oldest woman to win a WTA Tour-level singles match since 2004.

Following this victory, Williams received a wildcard entry into the Cincinnati Open but was eliminated in the first round.

Undeterred, she now sets her sights on the US Open, where she will compete in both the singles and mixed doubles events.

Mixed Doubles Partnership with Reilly Opelka

In addition to her singles appearance, Williams will team up with fellow American Reilly Opelka in the mixed doubles tournament at the US Open.

The mixed doubles event will take place on August 19 and 20, 2025, during US Open Fan Week at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

The 2025 US Open event has been revamped, featuring 16 teams, including eight wildcard entries.

Williams and Opelka‘s partnership adds an intriguing dynamic to the field, which also includes other notable pairings such as Iga witek and Casper Ruud, and Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz.

A legacy of excellence

Venus Williams‘ return to the US Open at 45 is a testament to her resilience and passion for tennis.

Her participation not only adds to the tournament’s rich history but also inspires players and fans alike with her enduring spirit.

With 14 Grand Slam doubles titles alongside her sister Serena, and a legacy of breaking barriers for women in sports, Williams continues to be a trailblazer in the tennis world.

Williams‘ influence extends beyond her victories. She has paved the way for future generations, proving that age and adversity need not define one’s career.

Her journey serves as a reminder that perseverance, talent, and passion remain central to achieving greatness in sports.
