Venezuela makes WBC history as Aaron Judge and Tarik Skubal face criticism for USA defeat

The 2026 World Baseball Classic final produced a moment that will be remembered in baseball history, but for Team USA, it was heartbreak. Venezuela captured its first-ever WBC championship with a 3-2 victory over the United States at LoanDepot Park in Miami, Florida.

The win marked a historic milestone for Venezuelan baseball and left American fans questioning the performance of their biggest stars, particularly captain Aaron Judge and starter Tarik Skubal.

Venezuela’s journey to the final was remarkable. After finishing pool play with a 31 record, the team advanced through the quarterfinals and semifinals, demonstrating clutch hitting and strong pitching. In the championship game, Venezuela struck first, scoring early with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run.

Their pitchers maintained composure under pressure, with Maikel García’s steady performance throughout the tournament earning him MVP honors. The decisive moment came in the ninth inning when Eugenio Suárez delivered a goahead double, securing the win and igniting celebrations across Venezuela.

Despite a roster stacked with star power, Team USA struggled to match Venezuela’s execution. Aaron Judge, the team’s captain, went 0 for 4 in the final, striking out three times. Fans immediately drew comparisons to his previous postseason struggles, noting that he has yet to win a World Series or WBC title.

Critics have labeled him a “serial choker,” echoing past disappointments during high-stakes games, including the 2024 MLB playoffs. Even a critical misplay in the outfield added fuel to the narrative, making it appear as though Judge was unable to rise when his team needed him most.

“Aaron Judge is a great player. However he is such a small player in big moments. This isn’t a personal thing, look at the stats,” wrote one fan on X.

“How is Aaron Judge so good and so bad at the same time,” wrote another.

“Aaron Judge really brought the post season feel to March,” added a third.

Fans reflect on USA performance

Another point of controversy was Tarik Skubal, who failed to make a second start for Team USA after returning to spring training. His limited appearances sparked debate about the impact of these roster decisions and whether the pitching staff had sufficient depth to counter Venezuela’s timely hitting.

While other American players delivered occasional sparks, they were unable to sustain consistent pressure, particularly in the late innings when the game was on the line.

Social media was ablaze with reactions following the loss. Some fans focused criticism on Judge, placing the defeat as part of a broader discussion about other star players underperforming in clutch moments.

Beyond individual performances, Venezuela’s victory highlights the growing competitiveness of international baseball. For the United States, it was a second consecutive WBC final loss, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of the tournament.
