Alex Morgan has built an illustrious soccer career, competing on the international stage and proudly representing the United States. The two-time World Cup champion bid an emotional farewell to her playing career on September 8, 2024, as her club, San Diego Wave FC, fell 4-1 to North Carolina Courage.

Morgan started the match but was substituted in the 15th minute, marking a symbolic farewell to the home crowd. At the time of her exit, the score was tied 1-1, but all eyes were on the veteran striker as she left the field to a standing ovation. The match continued without pause, yet the stadium erupted in applause as Morgan removed her cleats and walked off the pitch.

Throughout her decorated career, Alex Morgan has represented several high-profile clubs, including Olympique Lyonnais, Tottenham Hotspur, Orlando Pride, and the Portland Thorns. However, her connection to San Diego Wave FC holds particular significance, as the club represents both her home state of California and a new chapter in her professional journey.

San Diego Wave’s message to Alex Morgan.

“There will never be another 13,‘ read the message shared by San Diego Wave FC on Instagram, as the club paid tribute to former striker Alex Morgan. In the post’s comments, the team also announced plans to retire Morgan’s iconic No. 13 jersey during a ceremony set for September 7 at Snapdragon Stadium.

The ceremony is expected to be an emotional occasion as the team and Alex Morgan mark the anniversary of her retirement. The striker responds to the invitation of the San Diego Wave by uploading a story on the same social media, with the message “see you there, San Diego” with a pink emoji heart.

It is important to point out that Alex Morgan accompanied the team in their first 3 seasons in the NWSL, leading the squad to achieve the 2023 shield and the 2024 Challenge Cup. With the team of San Diego, she played 44 matches, scoring a total of 22 goals and assisting her teammates on eight occasions.

The Legacy that Alex Morgan left in US soccer.

The United States holds a storied legacy in women’s soccer, standing as the most successful national team in FIFA Women’s World Cup history. Among the nation’s greatest players is Alex Morgan, whose reputation extends beyond her two World Cup titles. The striker starred in 224 appearances with the USWNT and scored 123 goals.

Known for her goal-scoring ability, leadership, and consistency, Morgan has been a defining figure for the Stars and Stripes throughout her illustrious international career. The tribute from San Diego Wave to retire the No. 13 jersey next September serves as a club-level recognition of Morgan’s remarkable career.
