USMNT hit before World Cup as Christian Pulisic loses ‘Captain America’ status

Christian Pulisic’s struggles with form have become a major talking point as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, and it’s easy to see why. The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) has stumbled in recent tune-up matches, losing to strong European sides and leaving fans concerned about the team’s ability to perform on home soil.

Central to these worries is Pulisic, the team’s star player and captain, whose ongoing goal drought has become increasingly difficult to overlook.

The USMNT concluded the March international window with a 20 loss to Portugal, extending their winless streak against European competition. Pulisic was deployed in an unfamiliar striker role by head coach Mauricio Pochettino, a tactical experiment intended to get him closer to goal.

Despite his activity and involvement in the attack, he failed to convert any chances and was shown a yellow card during a frustrating first half. ESPN gave him a match rating of just 3/10, underscoring the level of disappointment.

Fans and analysts are also pointing to Pulisic‘s longer-term struggles. He hasn’t scored for the United States in eight consecutive international appearances, a drought stretching back to late 2024. Similarly, he has yet to find the net for AC Milan in 2026, raising questions about his form and confidence as the World Cup looms.

Many supporters are growing increasingly anxious, worrying that their most talented player may not peak in time for the tournament, which represents a historic opportunity for U.S. soccer on home turf.

“Pulisic with another embarrassing performance for the USMNT,” wrote one fan.

Rising pressure and lingering questions ahead of kickoff

Despite the concern, Pulisic‘s importance to the USMNT cannot be understated. He has been one of America’s most influential players over the past decade, leading the national team in goals and earning experience in Europe’s top leagues.

Though recent performances have been underwhelming, including a heavy 52 defeat to Belgium earlier in the same international break, some in the camp remain optimistic that his form will improve before the tournament begins. Pulisic himself has expressed confidence that he can end his scoring drought and contribute when it matters most.

Beyond one player’s struggles, the USMNT faces broader challenges. Defensive inconsistencies and a lack of clinical finishing have haunted recent matches. Pochettino and his staff will need to find cohesion and rhythm quickly if the team hopes to make a deep run in front of a home crowd.

The World Cup is just months away, meaning time for adjustment is limited, and the spotlight will be intense on Pulisic and the squad alike. How quickly the Americans can recover and find form will be pivotal to their success.

As the countdown to kickoff continues, the pressure on Pulisic and the USMNT is mounting. Fans are watching closely, hoping their captain can rediscover his scoring touch, and that the team can unite in time to make the most of a historic opportunity to shine on the world stage.
