USC stands alone: The college football powerhouse with the most No. 1 NFL Draft picks

From the bright lights of Los Angeles to the grand stage of the NFL, the University of Southern California has consistently proven to be a breeding ground for professional football excellence. With quarterback Caleb Williams selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, USC now leads all college programs with a record-setting six No. 1 overall picks, cementing its place as a true NFL talent factory.

This milestone isn’t just about quantity, it’s about the impact and star power behind those picks. Names like O.J. Simpson, Carson Palmer, and now Caleb Williams stand as testaments to the high-level preparation and performance that define USC’s football program. The Trojans have long held a reputation for developing pro-ready athletes, and that legacy shows no signs of slowing down.

A history written in gold and cardinal

USC’s journey to the top of the NFL Draft charts spans decades. The school’s first No. 1 pick, Ron Yary, went to the Minnesota Vikings in 1968 and went on to a Hall of Fame career. From there, the Trojans added Heisman Trophy winner O.J. Simpson in 1969, followed by quarterback Carson Palmer in 2003, and defensive end Courtney Brown in 2000. More recently, Sam Darnold was chosen in the top 3 in 2018, before Caleb Williams brought the sixth No. 1 pick home in 2024.

While each player’s NFL story is unique, their shared origin in USC’s program underscores the school’s ability to scout, develop, and launch elite athletes into the professional arena. The school’s emphasis on high-stakes competition, cutting-edge facilities, and elite coaching has made it a magnet for top recruits year after year.

West Coast dominance with national impact

Though SEC and Big Ten schools dominate many draft-day headlines, USC’s continued prominence proves that the West Coast remains a major player in shaping the future of the NFL. With the Trojans poised to join the Big Ten in the near future, their recruiting reach and competitive platform may only grow stronger.

Caleb Williams‘ selection is more than a personal milestone, it’s another brick in USC’s dynasty of NFL greatness. And if history is any indicator, he won’t be the last Trojan to hear his name called first on draft night.
