USA sneaks into WBC quarterfinals after Italy demolishes Mexico

For a few hours in Houston, the United States national baseball team could only watch and wait.

By the end of the night, Team USA had secured a place in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic. A decisive 9-1 victory by Italy over Mexico at Daikin Park finalized the standings in Pool B and pushed the Americans into the knockout round.

It was not how the defending champions expected to advance. Just one day earlier, the United States had been stunned by Italy, falling 8-6 in a game that suddenly complicated the group standings.

That defeat left Team USA dependent on the final Pool B game between Italy and Mexico. Several scenarios could have eliminated the Americans. A tight Mexican win or a high-scoring thriller could have triggered complicated tiebreakers.

Instead, Italy removed all uncertainty early.

Pasquantino steals the spotlight

The game quickly became a showcase for Vinnie Pasquantino, who delivered one of the most memorable performances in World Baseball Classic history.

Pasquantino blasted three home runs, becoming the first player ever to hit three homers in a single WBC game.

His first came in the second inning, a solo shot that barely cleared the glove of Mexican right fielder Jarren Duran. Italy kept building momentum.

In the fourth inning, Jon Berti launched a deep drive over the left-field wall to double the lead. Mexico attempted to stabilize the game after starter Javier Assad completed five innings with five strikeouts, but the Italian offense continued to apply pressure.

A well-executed bunt allowed Jac Caglianone to score, and shortly after that Jakob Marsee lined a two-run single that pushed the lead to 5-0.

Pasquantino added two more home runs later in the game as Italy’s offensive surge continued. Mexico managed a run in the seventh inning, but the gap was already too large to close.

Pool B settles after chaotic final day

When the final out was recorded, the standings became clear.

  • Italy finished Pool B undefeated at 4-0.
  • The United States advanced as runner-up with a 3-1 record.
  • Mexico ended its tournament at 2-2 and was eliminated.

Standings released by Major League Baseball and tournament officials confirmed the next matchups shortly after the game ended.

Earlier Wednesday, the Canada national baseball team defeated Cuba to win Pool A with a 3-1 record. That result created a quarterfinal meeting between Canada and the United States, scheduled for Friday night in Houston.

Italy, after its perfect group stage, will face the Puerto Rico national baseball team in the other quarterfinal matchup.

The entire quarterfinal bracket shifted because of Italy’s dominant performance.

Relief for the defending champions

For the United States, the final day of group play was unexpectedly tense.

Tuesday’s loss to Italy had placed the defending champions dangerously close to elimination. However, the six late runs scored by Team USA in that game ended up keeping them alive in possible tiebreaker scenarios.

When Italy’s offense erupted against Mexico on Wednesday, the situation quickly became straightforward.

Now the tournament moves into the knockout phase, where every game becomes elimination baseball.

Pitching decisions have not yet been announced, but Logan Webb is widely expected to start for the United States after opening the tournament earlier in the week.

Houston will host the quarterfinal matchup on Friday night.

The margin for error that existed in the group stage is gone.

As one analyst covering the tournament put it, “Pool play can be chaotic, but once the knockout rounds begin, every inning carries weight.”

For Team USA, the path forward is now simple: win and continue, or go home.
