The United States national team made three moves to its roster ahead of the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where it will face Canada.

The team led by Mark DeRosa advanced to the knockout stage as runners-up in their group, after a first round marked by unexpected results, including the defeat to Italy.

Three changes in the pitching staff

For this phase of the tournament, the regulations allow teams to make pitching substitutions using players included in the reserve of the initial roster. In contrast, position players can only be replaced in the event of injury.

With this rule, the United States decided to make three changes to its pitching staff.

The pitchers who are off the roster are:

  • Tarik Skubal (Detroit Tigers)
  • Michael Wacha (Kansas City Royals)
  • Ryan Yarbrough (New York Yankees)
  • Will Vest
  • Tyler Rogers (Toronto Blue Jays)
  • Tim Hill (New York Yankees)

A plan that was already in place

According to reports from the team, these changes were already planned from the beginning of the tournament.

The most striking case is that of Tarik Skubal, who had previously announced that he would only make one start in the World Baseball Classic before returning to the Tigers’ training camp.

Skubal had a good outing against Great Britain, but decided to return to Spring Training to continue his preparation for the MLB season.

The pitcher is entering the final year of his contract and will become a free agent at the end of the 2026 season, so he is looking to stay in shape to aspire to a big deal in the market.

Key reinforcement for the bullpen

With the additions of Vest, Rogers and Hill, the United States coaching staff aims to strengthen the bullpen for the final innings, a key area in knockout games.

The goal is to have more relief options to close out tight games in the final stretch of the tournament.

A complicated road to the quarter-finals

The United States reached this stage after an inconsistent group stage. The 8-6 defeat to Italy was one of the most surprising results of the championship and left the team depending on other results to advance.

Finally, Team USA managed to qualify as second in the group and will now face Canada in the quarter-finals.

What’s next for Team USA?

If the United States manages to overcome Canada, it will advance to the semifinals where it will face the winner of the clash between:

  • Dominican Republic
  • South Korea

Both teams are among the favourites in the tournament, which anticipates a possible high-level semi-final.

With these roster moves, Mark DeRosa is looking to have a stronger and more prepared bullpen for the knockout games, where any mistake could mean the end of the road in the World Baseball Classic.
