Tyron Smith’s NFL journey came full circle this week as he signed his final contract to retire with the team that drafted him back in 2011, the Dallas Cowboys.

After 14 seasons, including 13 in Dallas and one with the New York Jets, Smith was honored with a heartfelt retirement ceremony where Cowboys owner Jerry Jones lauded him as one of the greatest players in franchise history.

Tyron Smith, a legendary career anchored in loyalty and excellence

A cornerstone of the Cowboys’ offensive line throughout the 2010s, Smith reflected on his humble beginnings, his deep connection to Dallas, and the sacrifices that fueled his path to greatness.

Selected ninth overall out of USC, Smith immediately made an impact in his rookie season and quickly rose to elite status by his third year.

He was named to eight Pro Bowls, earned five All-Pro nods, and was a member of the NFL2010s All-Decade Team.

While his career may have ended without a Super Bowl ring, Smith’s legacy is secure, both in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor and, potentially, the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Over the span of his career, Smith built a substantial financial portfolio thanks largely to his NFL earnings.

After entering the league on a four-year, $12.5 million rookie contract, Smith signed a landmark eight-year, $97.7 million extension in 2014, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL at that time.

With over $22 million in guaranteed money in that deal alone, Smith’s total career earnings through 2023 are estimated at $119.1 million, according to Spotrac.

That level of on-field income has contributed to an estimated net worth of $21.1 million, per The US Sun.

While the bulk of his wealth stems from his NFL contracts, Smith has also supplemented his earnings with endorsements and sponsorship deals.

His long-term loyalty to the Cowboys, including the decision to sign a rare long-term extension at age 24, speaks to his character and commitment, traits that were repeatedly praised by Jones during the ceremony.

Though his body signaled it was time to walk away, Smith leaves behind a legacy of grit, loyalty, and excellence.

And after 14 seasons of protecting quarterbacks, he walks away not only as one of the game’s greats, but also a multi-millionaire.
