Two-time Super Bowl champion with Patriots faces aggravated assault and harassment charges

Shaq Mason, former offensive lineman and two-time Super Bowl champion, was arrested in Franklin, Tennessee, on Wednesday in connection with alleged domestic violence.

Authorities confirmed that Mason was taken into custody during a traffic stop and has been charged with aggravated assault, harassment, aggravated burglary, and driving on a suspended license.

Specific details regarding the alleged domestic incident have not yet been released. As of Wednesday afternoon, Mason remained in custody with bond set at $150,000.

The Franklin Police Department publicly shared his booking photograph on social media.

Mason, 31, was selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft (131st overall).

During his tenure in New England, he established himself as a dependable interior lineman, playing a significant role in protecting quarterback Tom Brady.

Mason was a key contributor to the Patriots’ Super Bowl victories in the 2016 and 2018 seasons, earning recognition for his consistency and durability along the offensive line.

Career decline after leaving New England

Following his successful years with the Patriots, Mason‘s career trajectory shifted. In 2022, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reuniting briefly with Brady.

However, the move did not result in a resurgence of his previous performance, as the Buccaneers‘ offensive line continued to face challenges.

In the 2023 offseason, Mason was acquired by the Houston Texans. His performance with Houston, however, did not match his early-career standard.

Pro Football Focus rated him at 62.3 overall, ranking him 66th among all NFL guards. During the season, he allowed eight sacks and committed three penalties.

As part of an effort to restructure their offensive line, the Texans released Mason and traded Pro Bowl guard Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders to reduce salary cap obligations.

Currently, Mason remains a free agent less than two weeks before the start of the 2025 NFL season. His arrest on serious charges further complicates his prospects of joining a team and casts uncertainty over the continuation of his professional career.

Mason‘s case underscores the challenges athletes may face when attempting to maintain a professional career after departing from a team where they experienced significant success.

While his contributions to the Patriots‘ championship teams remain notable, declining on-field production and legal complications have overshadowed his early achievements.

NFL organizations typically weigh both performance and off-field conduct when evaluating free-agent acquisitions.

Allegations of criminal activity can significantly limit opportunities for veteran players, particularly those whose recent seasons have shown a decline in productivity.

As authorities continue their investigation, Mason‘s professional future is uncertain. His arrest serves as a reminder of the rapid changes in a player’s career trajectory, even for athletes who were once integral to championship-winning teams.

The upcoming NFL season, which begins in less than two weeks, will likely be pivotal in determining whether Mason can return to the league or whether his professional football career may be permanently affected by these legal issues.
