Two-time Super Bowl champion will have another chance alongside Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes on the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are once again fine-tuning their roster as the NFL season approaches, and while veteran safety Mike Edwards was initially cut, he won’t be far from Arrowhead.

The two-time Super Bowl winner is back with the team, signing to the practice squad just hours after his release.

Edwards, 29, has had a winding career since entering the league as a third-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019. He earned his first championship ring with Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV, a victory that came at the expense of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Four years later, Edwards flipped sides, joining Kansas City on a one-year deal in 2023 and playing a pivotal role in their Super Bowl LVIII triumph.

Chiefs keep veteran depth in the secondary

After a short stint with the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans in 2024, Edwards returned to Kansas City this offseason on another one-year contract. Despite being cut during final roster moves, the Chiefs wasted no time in keeping him within the organization by signing him to the practice squad.

With 83 games played, 247 total tackles, and eight interceptions across his career, Edwards brings both production and experience. His knowledge of Steve Spagnuolo’s defensive system makes him a reliable option should injuries thin the Chiefs‘ secondary.

Another shot at history for Kansas City

Kansas City enters 2025 with one goal: to return to the Super Bowl after falling short in their quest to win three consecutive titles last year. Edwards‘ presence, even in a reserve capacity, could prove vital as the season unfolds.

For the Chiefs, the move represents both insurance and opportunity. Edwards has already shown he can step up on the biggest stage, and his decision to stay in Kansas City via the practice squad reflects his commitment to the franchise’s continued pursuit of championships alongside stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.
