Tua Tagovailoa could be on the hot seat if Mike McDaniel doesn’t succeed with the Dolphins

Despite securing a spot on the prestigious list of the NFL’s top 100 players for the 2025 season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is under intense pressure. His performance in the upcoming campaign will not only determine his own future with the team, but could also seal the fate of head coach Mike McDaniel.

Tagovailoa, ranked 91st on the list, has generated skepticism among some league analysts. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio was quick to pour cold water on the enthusiasm surrounding the quarterback. “That seems high. Tua Tagovailoa missed six of 17 games last season due to injury. He had a 6-5 record in his 11 starts. He finished 21st in passing yards and 19th in touchdown passes. If he’s number 91, there should be roughly 15 to 18 more quarterbacks in the remaining 90.”

Florio’s main criticism is that regardless of their position in any ranking, the rankings will be meaningless unless the Dolphins manage to make the playoffs in 2025. The analyst was blunt in pointing out that “the pressure is on in 2025”. If the Miami Dolphins fail to make the postseason and owner Stephen Ross decides to change coaches, the new head coach “will want a new QB, maybe not after a year, but immediately.”

All or nothing for Tagovailoa and McDaniel

This situation puts Tua Tagovailoa in a delicate position. The 2025 season is shaping up to be a crucial, make-or-break campaign for both the quarterback and head coach Mike McDaniel. Tagovailoa’s performance is not only tied to his tenure with the team, but is also a determining factor in the stability of his coach’s position.

In the American Football Conference (AFC), Tagovailoa is considered one of the most important quarterbacks. However, the 2025 season will undoubtedly be a year of great significance for both him and the future of the Miami franchise.

The MacDaniel Path

Mike McDaniel has taken a long and methodical path in the NFL, forging a reputation as one of the league’s brightest offensive minds before taking on his first head coaching job. His career, which spans 18 NFL seasons through 2024, is a testament to rising through dedication and success.

On February 7, 2022, Mike McDaniel was named the 11th head coach in Miami Dolphins history, marking his first experience in the top job. Under his leadership, the Dolphins have experienced a remarkable resurgence:

  • In his first season in 2022, he led the team to a 9-8 record and the playoffs.
  • In the 2023 season, they improved their record to 11-6 and again qualified for the postseason.

The new season will dictate the future of the coach, but for now, the faith is in him and especially in Tagovailoa.
