Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn’t hold back following a rough joint practice against the Detroit Lions. In a press conference after practice Tagovailoa delivered a frank message to his teammates that failure isn’t to be ignored, it’s to be confronted and learned from.
Detroit controls Miami, offense frustrated
The Dolphins offense struggled mightly during Wednesday’s joint session against the Lions in Detroit. Dan Campbell’s team controlled every phase, 7 on 7, 11 on 11, and red zone drills. This left Miami’s unit off balance and without the usual energy or rhythm. As Tua observed:
Offensively it was a very frustrating day in regards to what we wanted to do…we just weren’t able to get things jump-started
Lions’ defenders like Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, and Marcus Davenport were especially dominant, limiting Miami to only a handful of successful plays across 25 total downs. Detroit’s red zone defense was flawless, turning back nine consecutive attempts by Miami without allowing a single touchdown.
Tua’s call to action, “face it head on”
Despite the setbacks, Tua refused to let the tough outing define him or his team. He delivered a clear message to the locker room:
You got to face it head on. Any of these challenges…you got to look at it for what it is…got to learn from it. And that’s what it is
Head coach Mike McDaniel echoed that ethos, explaining that joint practices like these are “very intentional”, designed to test the team’s toughness and ability to handle adversity. “I’m very, very focused on the football and how we grow in that area, how we handle adversity in a joint (practice)”, McDaniel said.
